Dancing Classrooms was founded in 1994 by Pierre Dulaine. Dancing Classrooms is all over the world, from New York, to Switzerland, to California. They provide a variety of dances to children of all ages and even adults! This program builds young children's confidence and they advise the children that this will support them in the future by teaching them how to become more mature and to cooperate with all different people. As a bonus, students learn how to dance! This program develops essential life skills in children through the practice of social dance. Dancing Classrooms has different academies too, for people who are excellent dancers and adore the art of ballroom dance. Dancing Classrooms has different competitions for children who are very dedicated to dance and want to take it to the next level. The mission is to to help create schools and communities where every child is connected, respected, and provided a safe environment. Since that time, ballroom dance has become a 'tradition' at Quaker Ridge and all of the younger children look forward to this program in 5th grade. Mrs. Heffner, the teacher-in-charge is also a huge fan of ballroom dance in 5th grade. 'Ballroom Dance is wonderful experience for our 5th grade students at Quaker Ridge. The children start out very nervous and concerned particularly about how they are going to handle 'partners'. Children and faculty members look forward to seeing the 5th graders preform. I believe that there is a huge piece that helps foster children's relationships with their peers. This social connection and opportunity for them to come together as both a team and a class, is critical. Back then, in 2008 when ballroom was just starting out in Quaker Ridge, because it was relatively new, our teachers relied on the teaching artists from dancing classrooms to guide them through their experience,' claims Mrs. Heffner.
Ms. Jana was the fifth grade ballroom dance teacher this year at Quaker Ridge and she is a very experienced dancer. She started ballroom dancing in college. Ms. Jana is also a math professor at Manhattanville College. Who would ever think that she is a math professor? Ballroom dance and mathematics have absolutely nothing in common! Ms. Jana was going to become a math teacher, however she got an opportunity to be with dancing classrooms. This combined her love of teaching with her love of dancing. 'I was given this amazing opportunity with dancing classrooms, and I took it because it combined my love of teaching with dancing,' Ms. Jana claims at an interview with Mrs. Kenny's 5th grade Class. |
'There is no point to ballroom dance,' Jacob Haftel a 5th grade Quaker Ridge student remarked at first. Everybody in the 5th grade thought the same thing too in the beginning of ballroom dance. Also, Seth Jacobson another 5th grader who takes ballroom dance at Quaker Ridge said, 'I thought that this would be the worst experience of his life, but 3 lessons later I had some appreciation, and then 5 lessons later I loved to just go in and give it my all'. Noah, another 5th grade student claimed, 'It was frightening for me at the beginning, to touch my partner's hand. Now, I love dancing and think that it was a great experience. I also think that ballroom dance is a good way to cooperate with others and also learn to dance.' As you can see, everybody learned a new lesson, 'Don't judge something by it's cover.'
What is The Marvelous Musical Deli?
The Marvelous Musical Deli is an online resource dedicated to teaching the concept of musical form. This website is my endeavor to take the somewhat abstract concept of form and make it more concrete for younger students. While I am not the first to use the concept of making a sandwich to show the parts/sections of a piece of music, I believe this resource is unique in the depth to which it takes the concept. All ideas presented here have been field-tested in the general music classroom with 2nd-5th grade students. My kids love visiting The Marvelous Musical Deli! I hope you and your students find it just as educational (and fun)!
How do I use this website?
The Marvelous Musical Deli is broken into two main sections - For Students & For Teachers. The For Students side of the website is geared towards whole-class instruction (teacher presents material to students during music class) and/or student exploration at home. The For Teachers side is intended to be a behind-the-scenes resource full of lesson plans, extension ideas, curriculum connections (music standards), etc. The teacher resources may be accessed using the navigation bar at the top of this page.
More info about how to use & navigate the wesbite can be found on the How to Use the Deli page (listed under the curriculum tab in the navigation bar at the top of this page).
How do I access the student section?
The For Students section of the website may be accessed from the initial home page, or by clicking the 'For Students' ribbon in the top right corner of any For Teachers page. Likewise, you can return to the For Teachers page by clicking on the ribbon again while on any For Students page. Clear as mud? Here's what you're looking for..
Find the ribbon at the top of this page
and click on it to try it out.
How much does using the website cost? Do I need to pay a subscription fee?
Nope. This site is and always will be a free resource to teachers and students. I make no profit from the information or videos posted to The Marvelous Musical Deli. I do however offer worksheets and other resources for purchase through Teachers Pay Teachers. You can find a list of the deli-related resources I offer here.
In lieu of payment, I'd be mighty appreciative if you'd drop me a line and let me know what you think of the site. Sharing the website address with you music teacher friends would also be welcomed! :-)
